Building Community with House Meetings

After our first march in January, it was clear that people in our community wanted to dig deeper and continue the conversation. Founding member Tia Reece Mathisen graciously invited interested community members to her house to share food and stories.

That night a (racially, ethnically, and religious) diverse group of men and women met together. Tia invited each of us to share our personal stories around race and our reasons for wanting to be part of the group. Stories were personal, poignant, and a start to opening doors across racial and other barriers.

We’ve had several more House Meetings to gather together and continue the conversation. One was a deeper dive into talking through racial stories and another was a conversation on how to discuss racism with our children.  House Meetings serve as a powerful community-building tool for our group.
